WEDNESDAY, Sept. 13 (HealthDay News) -- Men who had erectile dysfunction were at a higher risk of heart disease and strokes, a study of men from two countries found.
The findings are the result of a study by the American Heart Association and researchers from the University of Southern California and the Medical College of California. The study was published on Tuesday in the journal Science Translational Medicine.
The study looked at 1,400 men from the United States, Canada and Australia who had erectile dysfunction and were on a daily pill called Viagra. Of the 1,400 men who were taking the drug, only 5.7 percent had erectile dysfunction, and of them, 10 percent had heart problems. The remaining 7.3 percent were men who had heart disease, according to the study.
Men from the U. S. had a lower risk of heart disease and had a higher risk of stroke compared with men from Canada and Australia. But men from the U. K., Denmark, France, Sweden and the U. K. were also at higher risk of heart disease.
The findings were published Monday in the journalJAMA Internal Medicine.
"In a population-based, multigenerational study of men aged 40 and older, the risks of cardiovascular disease were higher among men who were taking Viagra compared to those who had not," the researchers said.
Men who took Viagra had a 69 percent higher risk of developing stroke compared with those who did not. The authors said that Viagra had "potentially life-changing cardiovascular benefits."
The research was supported by the National Institutes of Health, the U. National Library of Medicine and the Kaiser Family Foundation.
The men in the study had high cholesterol, high blood pressure and a family history of coronary artery disease.
Viagra was the only medication for erectile dysfunction and was prescribed only for men with heart problems.
The drugs were also prescribed to help men with erectile dysfunction. Men taking the drugs had a 65 percent higher chance of developing Alzheimer's disease, the authors said.
The results, from the study, also support the association between taking Viagra and erectile dysfunction.
Viagra has been linked to Alzheimer's disease, the study said. The drug was approved for sale in 1998 and is the only one on the market for erectile dysfunction. About 5 percent of the men in the study had Alzheimer's disease, and a half of them were women.
Viagra has been linked to a link between Alzheimer's disease and a link between taking the drug and getting older.
"There is a lot of research showing that Viagra can have an effect on the brain, which in turn, can have a damaging effect on heart disease," the researchers said.
The study was sponsored by the American Heart Association, and it was conducted under the auspices of the American Heart Association.
Viagra was also the first medication to be approved by the U. Food and Drug Administration for erectile dysfunction. It is the first drug for the condition.
Viagra had been linked to a link between Alzheimer's disease and taking a drug called "tadalafil," which is used to treat erectile dysfunction.
The drug was also linked to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. The drug was also linked to a higher risk of death from heart disease in men taking the drug.
Researchers also found that men who used the drug for erectile dysfunction had a 30 percent higher risk of dying from heart disease compared with men who didn't use the medication. But the researchers said there was also a higher risk of death for men who had been taking the drug for other reasons.
Men taking the drug were at a higher risk of having a heart attack and stroke than those taking the drug for heart disease.
A study published in the journalClinical Endocrinologyreported that more than half of the men in the study who had erectile dysfunction had a stroke. Researchers found that men with erectile dysfunction had a 25 percent higher chance of getting a heart attack or stroke compared with men without erectile dysfunction.
"These findings suggest that taking erectile dysfunction drugs may not be as effective for men with erectile dysfunction as they once were," the authors wrote.
The researchers said the findings were "largely supported by a review of the literature.

Viagra 50mg Tablet is the active component of tablets. This medication works by blocking the enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) which causes breakdown of cGMP. By blocking PDE5, Viagra Tablet works at cGMP leading to an increase in blood flow. This increased blood flow can assist in enhancing erectile function during sexual activity.
Viagra (Sildenafil) is a medication which works by inhibiting the action of PDE5. This enzyme breaks cGMP, leading to the formation of a substance that causes the cGMP to accumulate and enhance the cGMP-Phosphodiesterase enzyme complex (PDE5). This leads to the accumulation of cGMP and the resulting events in the penis occur through an event.
